 Before we start check list:

Make sure you have a modem installed on your computer. More and more computers are being shipped without a modem.

Tip When you connect the phone cord to your modem, you should hear a click or feel a firm snapping in place. If you do not, make sure you are not connecting it to the networking card. They can be confused easily. The networking card jack is slightly bigger.

Connect a regular phone to test the phone line. Make sure you have dial tone.
Use a different phone cable if the cable is old or not in perfect condition.
Make sure the modem driver is installed and it is working properly (Check in the device manager)

If none of the above is the problem, start troubleshooting

Testing your modem with HyperTerminal:
 1. Click on the HyperTerminal program.

 2. The following window will pop-up. Click No.

 3. If you have not chosen the Country and Area Code, you will see the following window. Please fill the form and click OK.

 4. Then you will see the following window click OK.

 5. Type Testing in the name field then click OK.

 6. The Area Code will be filled for you. If not, enter the Area Code and the Phone number of a near by phone (your cell phone is a number commonly used for this test) then click OK.

DO NOT use the number of the phone line connected to your modem.

 7. Once you see the window below, click Dial.

 8. It will start dialing. If your modem is working properly, your cell phone (or the phone you entered in the Phone number field) will ring shortly.

 9. If you get the following window and the No Dialtone message, you have a problem with your phone line. Please double check the Before We Start check list.
